Usually, such twin galaxies are the result of a recent collision with a neighboring galaxy. However, the spiral galaxy NGC 1313 appears to be alone. Brightened by new and blue massive stars, star formation in NGC 1313 appears to be so exuberant that it is referred to as a "starburst" galaxy. Among the peculiar characteristics of NGC 1313 are that its spiral arms are inclined and that its rotation axis is not at the center of the nuclear cross. NGC 1313, pictured on coin, is about 50,000 light-years across and is located just 15 million light-years away in the constellation Reticulum.
